ABOUT SAWDUST STUDIOS

Hi! I’m Kelly, the owner and instructor behind Sawdust Studios. I’ve been teaching sign painting and creative classes for over 8 years, helping people create custom, meaningful pieces for their homes and businesses.

My journey into sign painting began through our family business. In my “day job,” I help run our family-owned lumber yard and hardware store alongside my cousin—a business our grandparents proudly started back in 1974. Wood, paint, and power tools have truly always been part of my life.

Several years ago, we added a furniture refinishing paint line to our store. My mom and I traveled to Tennessee to learn more about the products, and while I gained valuable knowledge, I also discovered that furniture refinishing wasn’t where my heart was. Not long after returning home, a friend showed me a Pinterest photo and asked if I could help her create a sign for her home. We borrowed her husband’s power tools, made pallet boards, cut vinyl, painted the sign—and just like that, a new creative path was born.

I quickly realized that what I truly loved was teaching and creating. Instead of refinishing furniture, I began inviting people into our retail space to paint custom and seasonal signs for their homes. Sawdust Studios started humbly in my garage and after-hours in our store, and it has grown ever since.

Today, I offer regular public classes throughout the year, along with private classes for businesses, families, real estate offices, and special events. I also take on custom projects including wedding gifts and business signage. In 2023, I expanded even further by purchasing a cargo trailer and rolling tables, making Sawdust Studios fully mobile. I now travel on-site for team-building events and private sign classes.

My love for business comes straight from my grandparents, who gave our family the opportunity to build and grow something lasting. On my mom’s side, my grandfather was a retired architect who spent his later years creating in his woodshop. When I’m working with wood today, I feel deeply connected to his creativity and craftsmanship—it’s a legacy that continues to inspire me.
